The Centre for Gender Studies in Europe was established in 2000 to form productive interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers and teachers within the University.
European Context
Our members' work encompasses gender issues in the European context, ranging from specific interests in particular European states through to questions of European integration, citizenship and cultures.
Our European interests do not exclude internationalism, since European experiences also offer links with and insights into the wider world. Within Europe there are wide variations of gender relations in power and in everyday experience as well as in the pursuit of and contribution to knowledge. The transnational dimensions of the European experience can be seen in the activities of the Centre.

Activities
We started off on a local base with a two-day White Rose Colloquium in June 1999 which facilitated other projects. Since then we have held workshops, seminars and international conferences involving fellow researchers from other universities in the UK, Europe and beyond.
Initially developed by a group of colleagues within the School of Modern Languages, the Centre has worked with other University research centres, such as the Centre for Nineteenth Century Studies, the European Social and Cultural Studies Centre and the Centre for Research into Freemasonry to host a number of international conferences. More information can be found on the Previous Activities page.
Database
Whilst the European focus is important for the core activities of the Centre, we aim to promote and assist the development of Gender Studies in all faculties across the University. To facilitate this we have set up a Gender Studies Database and encourage all colleagues with a gender aspect in their teaching and / or research to enter their details on the database. This will enable them to identify colleagues with similar gender interests, make details of their own work and publications accessible to others and facilitate interdisciplinary research projects and funding applications.
